7 Essential Tools for Smartphone or Tablet Repair

When working on smartphone or tablet repair it is important to take steps before hand to make sure the procedure goes smoothly. Look up repair procedure online to get a good idea of what to expect when taking apart your device. YouTube is a great resource to check out before a repair to see hands on video of the process that a written manual might miss. Before the repair you should have 7 important tools by your side. The first important tool is a magnetic project mat. Setting up your work area in an organized manner is essential to the repair. The procedure should be done on a smooth surface with the magnetic mat resting on the surface with the device laying on it. Having repaired mobile devices for years now I have never come across a project that needed any tools not listed in this article.   Screw drivers:  A good screwdriver set is probably the most important tool in all of mobile device repair. Smartphones and mobile devices usually require special security bits to dissemble. The good news is you can find some very reasonably priced screwdriver sets designed for mobile device repair. These come with all the special bits you need for the majority of repairs. Pry tools / Openers: These are small tools used to pry bezels away from frames, and batteries out of recesses. Usually plastic and coming in many variants these are nice tools to have because they will pry apart delicate components without damaging them. I prefer plastic spudgers over metal ones because you run no risk of shorting out components on the logic board. Suction Cup: Suction cups are needed in many repairs to lift the screen off of the device. Especially if you are considering repairing apple products suction cups are necessary. IPA: (Iso Propyl Alcohol) The recommended cleaning solutions for mobile phone’s printed circuit board (PCB).   Today I will be showing you how to breathe some new life into that old tablet you have lying around. I have found the coolest project you can do with an old tablet is to convert it into a smart mirror display. This is a very easy project requiring very little technical knowledge and less than $20 in supplies assuming you have the most basic of tools at your disposal. Out of everything on the list below the only item I needed to source was the mirror which I got on Amazon for $14 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017ONH3EG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)   Supplies: Old Tablet Wall charger 12″ x 12″ Acrylic See-Through Mirror Cardboard Tape measure Scissors or razor knife Electrical tape Marker These are all the supplies you need for this project and almost every single one could be substituted to fit what you have laying around your house. Now that you have compiled everything you need to assemble this smart mirror we must start by first selecting the correct settings and installing the software on the tablet. Prepping the Tablet               First make sure your tablet is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. I recommend doing a factory reboot to purge the device of any clutter that may have accumulated in the devices past life. Assuming you are now running a clean reset Android 4.0 or higher tablet the next step is getting into the power saving settings of your device. How to find disassembly and reassembly instructions for laptop, Ultrabook and mobile device repair?

I hate to make a long story short so lets expand on this a little. I grew up with highly pixelated images, The Number Munchers game, and well before Google. If you need answers you went to go get them. As in physically leaving the house to go get them.  Number Munchers circa 1991 ish Since we have all of resources at our fingertips i'll highlight some of the best sources that may come up during your google search. The best way to find disassembly and reassembly instructions are to first search by the model and brand of mobile device, laptop or ultrabook that you own. If you have a Dell Ultrabook it's best to do a search using both dell and ultrabook disassembly and reassembly as keywords. This will give you a more narrowed down search that is specific to your kind of device.  If you do a generic search it will give you instructions for their device which may not apply to yours. If you are a visual person you can even watch YouTube tutorials to see how others have disassembled and reassembled thier device or even follow along with them. Here's a screenshot of a video on YouTube that shows the disassembly of a Dell Ultrabook: To complete the process with less errors, I recommend using YouTube because it is easier to follow the instructions.   https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Dell+XPS+13+Teardown/36157 Ifixit gives detailed step by step instructions on disassembling a Dell Ultrabook along with pictures like the one seen above from their website.
