Most Important Tools for Smartphone Repair

This is an overview of the most common and useful tools needed for smartphone or mobile device repair. I will be giving a small summary of each tool needed and what purpose they serve. Having repaired mobile devices for years now I have never come across a project that needed any tools not listed in this article.   Screw drivers:  A good screwdriver set is probably the most important tool in all of mobile device repair. Smartphones and mobile devices usually require special security bits to dissemble. The good news is you can find some very reasonably priced screwdriver sets designed for mobile device repair. These come with all the special bits you need for the majority of repairs. Pry tools / Openers: These are small tools used to pry bezels away from frames, and batteries out of recesses. Usually plastic and coming in many variants these are nice tools to have because they will pry apart delicate components without damaging them. I prefer plastic spudgers over metal ones because you run no risk of shorting out components on the logic board. Suction Cup: Suction cups are needed in many repairs to lift the screen off of the device. Especially if you are considering repairing apple products suction cups are necessary. IPA: (Iso Propyl Alcohol) The recommended cleaning solutions for mobile phone’s printed circuit board (PCB). This is because the Alcohol will clean all the circuitry but immediately evaporate therefore not damaging the circuitry. Ultrasonic Cleaner Machine: Used to safely and deeply cleanse logic boards and chips. These are the same units used to clean jewelry because...

How to re-purpose an old tablet into a smart mirror display

Today I will be showing you how to breathe some new life into that old tablet you have lying around. I have found the coolest project you can do with an old tablet is to convert it into a smart mirror display. This is a very easy project requiring very little technical knowledge and less than $20 in supplies assuming you have the most basic of tools at your disposal. Out of everything on the list below the only item I needed to source was the mirror which I got on Amazon for $14 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017ONH3EG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1)   Supplies: Old Tablet Wall charger 12″ x 12″ Acrylic See-Through Mirror Cardboard Tape measure Scissors or razor knife Electrical tape Marker These are all the supplies you need for this project and almost every single one could be substituted to fit what you have laying around your house. Now that you have compiled everything you need to assemble this smart mirror we must start by first selecting the correct settings and installing the software on the tablet. Prepping the Tablet               First make sure your tablet is running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or higher. I recommend doing a factory reboot to purge the device of any clutter that may have accumulated in the devices past life. Assuming you are now running a clean reset Android 4.0 or higher tablet the next step is getting into the power saving settings of your device. Go to Settings, Display, Advanced, Sleep and then select always on when plugged in. After you have set the correct power / screen settings you will want follow this...

How to edit Microsoft Office documents on Android Phone

This feature is great to have for people that are on the go. Whether you’re a student or business person, instant access to files, along with the ability to add, edit, share documents, is key to success. Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, are widely used by many people. Also, being able to store items in the Cloud, and being able to open them without waiting for a download is an awesome time saver. I currently have the Samsung Galaxy S8, and looking through the apps that came installed on my phone, I didn’t have Office 365, nor was it available as a ‘whole’ in the Google Play Store. I had to individually install each office app, as shown below. Once installed, when accessing a file, such as a Word Docx, my phone then prompts me to choose between the default app installed, which is Hancom Office Editor, or the newly installed Microsoft Office app. Be aware that once you choose which app you want the document to open with, it is then the default, and you would need to go into Settings and locate the app that you want to make changes to:   Locate and click the Default area: You will then find the option to Clear Defaults This will allow you to choose a different app/program the next time you open a document, if need be.   In Microsoft Excel, it can be a bit daunting due to the size limitations of your mobile device, to view the entire spreadsheet. But, if you only need to enter information in cells, or edit a column, this is very useful to...

Today, your greatest information source lies right at your fingertips.  It is the world-wide web (“www” or “web”)! The web is an information space where documents and other web resources are identified by Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), interlinked by hypertext links and easily accessible through the internet.  Countless “how to’s” and do-it yourself “diy” imaginable is sourced on numerous websites.  And the leading forum specializing in internet-related searches, including webpages, images, videos and more in Google.  Google is the perfect place to find instructions for disassembling and reassembling laptop, Ultrabook, and mobile device repair, and much more. Notice, the snip (or partial screenshot) of the Google search engine below or Chrome browser (Google and Google Chrome have similar names, but different details –  Chrome is a web browser developed by engineers at Google). After typing in whatever you want to search, press the Enter key on the keyboard of your computer. Choose the most specific or relevant keywords or phrases to describe your topic, for example:  “how to disassemble an iPhone 4S?” and press ENTER on your keyboard. To maximize your search research, give specific details about the product, such as manufacturer’s name and version.  Next, access your results.  Use the tabs at the top to help define what type of search you want.  For “how to,” I would suggest a video.  In the image above, the first search result shows a guide in a portable document format (commonly referred to as “pdf” which is a file format used to present and exchange documents reliably), and the second is a YouTube link.  The more information you have, the better! ...
