Microsoft Windows 10: Key Differences Between Edge and Internet Explorer Browsers

Internet Explorer 11 VS Microsoft Edge: User Interface The visual difference between Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11 isn’t all that much. There hasn’t been a vast overhaul of the UI, or any drastic changes to the page layouts, and even the logo is similar. Instead, Edge features a host of minor tweaks that somehow add up to something much more impressive than IE. The interface is much more minimalist, with the navigation buttons reduced to their bare minimum. The whole experience feels sleeker and more streamlined than IE’s indefinably clunky navigation. It’s a much more pleasant browser to use, and on a par with the aesthetically gorgeous Chrome. Internet Explorer 11 VS Microsoft Edge: Features Microsoft’s venerable browser is not exactly renowned for its additional functionality. The company has taken steps to remedy this with Edge, and the new browser features a host of new applications. Most interesting of these is the annotation feature. A button at the top places a OneNote style overlay onto the current web page, allowing users to add text boxes, handwritten notes or drawings, highlight sections and copy areas of the page. These can then be shared via various channels or saved to OneNote for future reference. At present, the sharing options are limited, but expect these to increase as Windows 10 matures. It’s a surprisingly useful feature, and one that will prove invaluable to students or those that do high levels of internet research. Also present is a Pocket-style Reading List function. Any web page can be saved to a separate list from within Edge, to be read at your leisure, as...

7 Best Personal Self Improvement Apps for Android

Duolingo: Duolingo is a great way to improve yourself by learning a second language. This app is great because it makes learning a new language fun, and there are hundreds of languages to choose from. I have begun learning Spanish by playing Duolingo for 15 minutes a day. Duolingo slowly builds a complete knowledge by teaching you not only how to speak but also how to write the language.     Argus: Argus is a great self-improvement app designed with physical health in mind. What I love most about Argus is that it’s a complete multi-faceted health solution. Argus tracks your activity, your diet, water intake, sleep and offers a social media community for encouragement. Installing Argus allowed me to stop using four separate apps simplifying my day to day life. Argus has a honeycomb layout and every day slowly fills in different tiles so you can get a complete view of your habits over time.     Meetup: Meetup is my favorite hobby building and networking app. Meetup will ask for your interests and location. Then it will show you a list of local meetups matching your interests. There are two great benefits to using this app. First this is a great way to learn more about your favorite interests and grow your hobbies. Secondly Meetup will get you out of the house and networking with a group of like minded people. Not only can you join other meet ups but also you can create your own meet up if you so choose.     Headspace: Headspace is guided meditation app. I started using Headspace to try...

Mistakes to Avoid When Looking for an IT Computer Support Job

According to the report, conducted by career website, AfterCollege, from a March survey of 600 college students, 79% of students have done at least one internship in the past six months, but 57% of those internships were unpaid and 76% did not result in a job offer. Below are some of the mistakes recent graduates make. Not applying for enough jobs According to the survey, 44% of students only apply to between one and five jobs at a time. Students should go after 30-40 jobs at once. I agree that it makes sense to consider numerous possible employers, but I think it’s also wise to set your sights, on one firm or a handful of companies where you feel truly motivated to work. That said, you shouldn’t wait around for your efforts to bear fruit. Do pursue alternatives in the meantime. The best-case scenario is that you get more than one offer and can use it as leverage to negotiate the terms you want from your target employer.   Failing to do enough of their own networking. While 57% of students say they wish their schools offered more networking opportunities, there are students that don’t take it upon themselves to ask their career offices for help. Half of students either haven’t used their school’s career office, have had a bad experience, or feel the office needs improvement. I have begun to connect with MATC alumni to see where they stand, ask questions about the market, and begin new relationships. Alumni can teach students about the day-to-day realities of a job, how to craft a resume, how to interview,...

Windows 10 Productivity Improvements

Cortana Cortana is what Microsoft calls a digital agent. What is a “digital agent”? It’s one of the first things that a new Windows 10 user will experience. I was hoping for James Bond’s computer construct counterpart meets Hackerman from Fung Fury, but technology is not quite there yet. The Cortana software is really an interface to other features of the Windows 10 operating system. If the PC is setup with a microphone and the correct settings, you can talk to it. This has the same functionality as typing in the taskbar. Users will need to click the microphone icon in the taskbar to make her “listen”. Cortana can handle reminders and timers with ease. It can even send emails, manage lists, and calendars. My favorite feature is that it can open apps for you. This digital agent feature is exciting because it seems like budding artificial intelligence technology. I hope I’m around someday when new operating systems only function through microphones and AI. Set These Tabs Aside – Edge Browser I can see you rolling your eyes already. Microsoft’s web browsers are the Nickelbacks of computer technology, everyone’s punching bag. Other, more popular web browsers don’t come with a feature like this. There are extensions available, but those are not always the smoothest apps. Tabs can add up in a hurry. They’re not always relevant but it can be a heartbreaker if we lose them. Users can keep their tabs for later browsing and clear the row of tabs for an uncluttered page with this feature. Simply click the icon when you’re ready to manage the tabs. Multiple...

How to negotiate salary and benefits for IT Computer Support Job

Many of us wonder if there is time and effort at work and is it worth what we are earning. Should we be getting more, less, or equal to what we should be receiving? This is where you should take the time before you go to your interview and research salary and how to deal with negotiating for higher pay in your workplace or interview process. Doing some research can help with the statistics of your salary and doing that makes a difference for you when you negotiate for higher pay. The best way to start researching is knowing the job you are applying to offers a salary in the range you are seeking. After all, why should you waste hours on your cover letter, resume, and interview questions for a job if it pays less that what you are worth? Here are a few ways to find out what kind of salary your future job offers. First, if you are working with a recruiter ask her about the job’s salary range. Second, if you are researching on your own then you may find a salary range on the job posting from websites like Glassdoor or Payscale. When you go to a job interview and want to bring up the topic of compensation you should let the employer make the first move or if you feel that the employer is starting to invest lots of time in the interview without the idea of the income range. After that you should be able to ask about the salary you desire so that you and the employer can be on the...
How to Build a Quality Self Service Guide for End Users

How to Build a Quality Self Service Guide for End Users

Today I will be sharing a few of my tips and tricks on creating a quality self-service guide for end users. Throughout my journey at MATC I have had to write several self-service guides almost every semester. I have learned a lot as I have slowly have gotten better and more confident at creating these step by step guides.  I have found the most important aspects of writing these self-service guides and will discuss them in detail in this article. My first and most important tip is to thoroughly research the topic matter of whatever your making the self-service guide about. Before you can begin the writing process you must have a complete understanding of your subject. I always want to know not only the steps of how to make something work but also why and how it works. Keep in mind you are writing this from a position of knowledge and should be able to speak at length about any aspect of the process. Having a better understanding of how and why things work the way they do will make you be able to write more confidently and better articulate the instructions in your guide. My next tip is before writing the guide you should actually and successfully do whatever you are writing about.  This is important for several reasons one being that it will help you work out any small kinks or bugs in your process that you may have missed if you are just writing from theory rather than practice. I think this also helps you to write the guide in a step by step fashion....
