Preparing a Job Application and Passing a Skills Test for an IT Support Job
To have success when completing job applications there are a couple of things that a very important. One of the things you need to do is come prepared with the information you need. You should bring your resume, driver’s license, and your social security card. Some other important information that you should bring is information from past employers. This information includes the past employers phone number and address as well as starting and ending salaries from those past positions.
Another very important thing to do is to carefully read the directions and follow the applications format. This can be thought of as the first test on the application as it shows how well you can read and follow directions. The application should be completed as nice as possible. If it is a paper application it needs to be written in black or blue pen. The application should not be folded or creased in anyway.
The answers that you provide on the job application should be tailored to the job that you are seeking. You will want to make your focus on your education and experience and how it applies to the position that to are applying to. This is your opportunity to stand out from the crowd and show why you are the best candidate for the position. Don’t provide any negatives and always be truthful. Do not put any salary requirements on the application as it is way too early in the process to be requesting a specific salary range. Provide references on your application and keep your application consistent with your resume. Make sure all the dates and times are the same on the application and they are on your resume. Always proof read your application before submitting it. Check for all errors including spelling and grammatical mistakes.
Preparing for the Interview and Skills Test.
One of the first things you should do to prepare is to research the organization you plan to work for. This is an easy way for you to stand from other candidates who didn’t prepare as much as you did. Some simple ways to research the organization include going to their website to get a full scope of what it is they do. Review the company’s background and mission statement. You can also develop a question list to ask about the organization or the position.
Another important step is to make sure that you have prepared responses to interview questions. Most interview questions will be a combination of resume based, behavioral, and case questions. Every interview is different but here are some common examples of questions asked during the interview.
Q: Why do you want this computer support specialist job?
A: I love customer support because I love the constant interaction with people and personal satisfaction I get from making my clients happy by resolving their IT related problems.
Q: What is your biggest weakness?
A: Sometimes I work too much and don’t maintain a great work life balance or sometimes I’m not as fast as I should be because I pay too much attention to the small details.
The next step to prepare for the interview is to make sure you a well-dressed. You need to plan what you want to wear. You can go business casual with a neutral colored shirt and business attire shoes. Make sure your clothes are ironed and don’t have any stains. Overall be sure to make sure that your appearance is professional and neat.
You should also plan what you need to bring. You may want to bring a list of your references or extra copies of your resume. Make sure to use quality paper for extra copies of your resume or other documents that you may handing to your potential employer. You may also want to bring a notepad or something to write and write with to take notes.
You should also be wary of your nonverbal communication. Your body language speaks volumes. Be professional even while waiting for the interview as waiting room behavior could be reported. Make sure to sit up straight and make good eye contact with the interviewer. Respect their space and do not place anything on their desk.
Make sure to follow-up. This applies during the interview and after. When asked if you have any questions make sure you have some questions prepared. Some examples include “what is the organizations culture like” or “what are the opportunities for advancement.” If you haven’t heard anything after a week or two after the interview then it is acceptable to call and ask to have your resume and application kept on file and what you could do to improve.
When preparing to pass the skills till it is important you prepare as best as possible. Like the preparing for the interview make you have studied and prepared so you are ready to pass the skills test. There are many different practice tests that you can find online for free that will prepare you for mental arithmetic questions and written sections that also include written arithmetic and written data. Typing practice tests are very useful too especially if you are going into a job that requires you to accurate type a certain amount of words per minute.
