Below are our student success stories, they shared with us during their studies and after graduation:
I have a few credits to finish up in fall for my associate degree. So far my experiences have been very positive. The IT Support Program at MATC has been what I expected. I think more high level classes would be good. I’m sure that the networking courses get into more intense material, but networking isn’t my favorite thing. The Support program does make me want to continue my education in IT. I think that’s a positive.
When I started back at MATC, it was difficult because I’d been out of school for something like 16 years. I didn’t know exactly what to expect or how I would adapt to classes again. I can’t think of anything that would have helped me first. It was definitely time to get back in school and it has worked out well.
The only change I would make to the MATC program would be scheduling, There were plenty of courses that I wanted to take in class rather than online but the scheduling wasn’t available. I assume this has to do with enrollment and staffing limitations, so I don’t have anything bad to say about it

I think the program was great. I learned and experienced a lot. There was a lot of hands on experience that i really enjoyed for better or worse. But beyond that it was a great experience to get my degree through MATC Im glad i chose this technical College to attend and i still know its a long journey ahead of me but im ready the best of luck to everyone out there

It has been a rewarding experience to be at Milwaukee Area Technical College. I join a long list of family members who have either attended or graduated from MATC, some of whom are either completing a four-year college or have a satisfying career, including both of my sons, and three nieces. I can remember moving to Milwaukee over 20 years ago, and one of the first things that stood out was the downtown MATC campus – I was impressed and knew then that I could someday become a part of the MATC campus academic lifestyle. At first, I enrolled in a cosmetology program which my United Migrant Opportunity Services (UMOS) counselor encouraged me to take. I never went further then applying for the program, because it was not truly my career choice. Years later, I applied and registered for courses in the ITSUP program… there begins the early stages of my dream career in Information Technology. The ITSUP program has developed and advanced my understanding in IT through industry-driven education and training, and the connective tissue of networks. I am now comfortable that I will meet the expectations of potential employers in the Information Technology Customer Support workforce.
Many of concerns stemmed from financial aid and book costs. Additionally, as a student with disabilities, I would have preferred more hands-on experience. However, the simulators and virtual machines did meet the expectations of computer architectures and provided functionality of a physical computer. My problems occurred because of the general condition of my laptop, which has provided many years of service; however, it needs to be replace within the immediate future (that is an issue I need to personally address in the very near future).
Another concern was that there are few academic resources at MATC that are readily available to consult with regarding IT. I have experienced many “dead-ends” through Tutoring Services and other support systems when seeking assistance with IT-related courses. I did note that towards the end of the Spring semester an individual was assigned in the Computer Production Center to assist with questions related to information technology courses.
The best part of my curriculum has been connecting with MATC instructors. Jonathan Arnold, Mark Miller (who has assumed a different position outside of MATC), and Vadim Mikhailenko, are established and emerging innovators in the Information Technology field have been vital in my education at MATC. Through direct and meaningful conversations with these and many other instructors at MATC, I have gained knowledge, reassurance, and confidence as a Computer Support Specialist.

I was excited to get an IT job. This was the position I really wanted after I interviewed for it.Getting the call with the offer was surreal. With or without the internship part of it, this is the position I wanted. I hope I continue to feel that.

Overall when I look back on my experience in the IT support program I can safely say it was a good experience. I never found anything too difficult and if it was because I was challenged to learn a new skill. Overall with someone new into the program or is interested I would say take the classes in the program order and get the generals completed first and then take the main program classes.
I seen numerous first or second semester students enroll in a third semester courses with out completing the first or second semester classes and when they don’t understand the material they freak out and drop the class. Or when they are taking 2 main program class and a English and math and they feel overwhelmed they drop a class in which I see it as a waste. So I would tell them complete your general classes and then take the main program classes in order. It will save you the trouble and you will understand the material as you progress. Overall I would say that the resources that MATC provided for the students in the IT support course have been great. CTB nuggests, software like VM ware, ect. They have been great to use and we will know how to use it in the work force as we have experienced it in class.

Why I selected MATC IT Computer Support for my education: I have just completed the IT Computer Networking Associates Degree Program through MATC. It took me a little longer than the traditional 2 years but I was able to take classes around my needs & life’s events. As well the classes were not as expensive compared to other local colleges. Additionally, after looking at the job market, from what I have seen, any job you look for companies, hiring managers expect employees to handle multiple roles in the IT field. So just about anywhere you go, you will need to provide some kind of support to end-users. How the program will help me to reach my professional IT career goals: A second degree would be beneficial to help me stand out from other candidates seeking employment. It might also help me to obtain a higher starting salary with the actual hands-on experience gained in the MATC classroom. Depending on the classes you take, MATC provides students the opportunity to gain IT Certifications, generally helpful in employment; these certifications can be gained before formal employment and even before you graduate. If you are in a current job and certain Certification may be needed, you can take just the courses required for the certification. Guide charts are posted in the class material online, in the classrooms, and in the hallways. The things I especially like about the IT Computer Support program that other perspective students should know: I would have to say that in my experience, most instructors recognize that life happens and there will be extenuating circumstances once in a while that will make getting to class hard or homework late. The flexibility and understanding each instructor brings to the classroom is refreshing. As long as it does not become a habit, it can be corrected. But you can only expect to get out of school what you put in. If you try hard, instructors should see such and will work with you to make sure you reach your goals. Even if you need a tutor, do not take the need for extra help as a negative. You are not weak. When I started, I utilized a tutor. I am transitioning from a different career of over twenty years. Now I have become a tutor to others. The program is critiqued by students, industry professionals, and past students to keep it up to date and viable with technology as well as the job market. The program is set up to help you succeed at whatever you want to do.
If you like a particular instructor, you can even make that person you counselor, helping you to pick future classes; it helps to provide more personal contact compared to the person who may have helped you when you first entered the program.

I came to MATC right out of high school in the fall of 2014. I’m from Green Bay and decided to attend MATC because of its great IT program (and I wanted the away from home experience). I really enjoyed the IT program, learned a lot, and loved Milwaukee. I graduated in the spring of 2016 and had hoped to get a job in the Milwaukee area but ended up receiving an opportunity through a connection for a job at an IT Consulting company in the Green Bay area that I couldn’t turn down because it was too good to refuse. I’m glad I decided to attend MATC and I’ve been getting a lot of use out of my degree. So far I’m loving my new job, but maybe I’ll be back in Milwaukee sometime in the future.

When I first entered college out of high school, I didn’t have the greatest picture of where I wanted to end up or be. When you don’t have this set going to a university is a very expensive way to get your general electives done. I realized this and decided to enroll in MATC in order to attempt to get an idea of what I wanted to do as well as save money in the process. When I went through the degrees offered by MATC, the Computer Support Specialist degree stood out to me. With MATC’s wide range of classroom hours I was able to work and go to school which was a major selling point for me. Another thing that solidified my choice in this program was the newly formed agreement with UWM to allow IT students to transfer over and carry roughly 60 credits into a bachelors degree in Information Science Technologies. During my time here I was able to obtain an internship at a local company for an internship class. Being able to apply what you’re being taught is an amazing feeling and makes you want to continue your education to progress in your field of study. My whole experience in with the IT department was a great experience, from teachers to classmates. These are people you’ll want to know for a lifetime, and are always willing to help you out. Thanks MATC!

I very much enjoyed my time at Milwaukee Area Technical College and specifically all the courses I took in the IT Support Program. The IT Support program is structured well, so every semester you are working toward a goal of a certifcates. It’s a great idea. I found that every time I needed help the instructor’s were knowledgeable and willing to work with me. I had a course cancelled on me right before the start of the semester and 3 instructor’s helped me get enrolled last minute. I would recommend this program to anyone who is smart with technology and wants to persue a job in IT.

When I started on this path in IT, I knew nothing. What I did know was that I was ready for something new. I spent many sleepless nights wondering if I made the right chose. Now that I am near the end, I think I have. MATC is a great place to start. The courses are quite challenging but, relates to the real world. I have learned soooo much and I feel that I am prepared for the next step. The only thing I would recommend changing or adding is a mock call center setup for the final semester. I feel with this, each student can get the ” real world” learning experience.
And as for my Instructors, I have had some of the best. They have been patient, helpful and very understanding. I will miss them and MATC, but I must spread my wings and continue to fly.

“I have chosen MATC because there are several campus locations and the price of the classes are very reasonable. I started taking Computer Support classes because I am in the IT networking program and some of the support classes are required as part of my program. After taking a few support classes I realized that I really enjoy them. I am taking a support class now that is not required in my curriculum. I believe the support program widens my career opportunities. I am in the IT/Networking program and am very thrilled that as an MATC student, that we have access to all the new and incredible technology that is vital to our growth as students. I will be graduating from MATC with a 3.7 GPA in 2017 with an Associate’s degree in IT/ Networking. I hope to get an IT/support Diploma or Associates degree as well in the near future.”
Matthew R. (May 2016)
“I selected the MATC IT Computer Support program for my education because there is a lot of jobs available in IT and I have love and knowledge for technology. This program can help me get a job in IT Helpdesk and Computer Hardware. I like that I worked hands on with Comptia A+, Network +, HDI-SCA, and Desktop Support. The most important thing that I like about the West Allis Campus is networking with my classmates, therefore our companionship will be beneficial i the future job wise.”
